Lagertha is a shield-maiden described by the Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus around 1200. In his story she fights in men's clothing to avenge the Norwegian king Siward, impresses Ragnar Lodbrok, and becomes his first wife after he kills a bear and a hound guarding her home in the Gaula valley. Divorced, she later rescues Ragnar with 120 ships, then kills her new husband and rules alone. She is found in no other medieval source and is considered legendary.
