Explore the History of Lithuania

Lithuania emerged as a unified Baltic state in the 13th century under Mindaugas, crowned king in 1253. Over the next two centuries, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania expanded rapidly and became the largest state in Europe by territory, stretching from the Baltic towards the Black Sea. It included modern Lithuania and Belarus, most of Ukraine, and parts of Poland, Latvia, Russia and Moldova.

After the Union of Krewo in 1385, Lithuania formed a close alliance with Poland and adopted Christianity. Together, the two states defeated the Teutonic Order at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410.

In 1569, they created the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, while Lithuania retained its own laws, administration and institutions.

The Commonwealth weakened during the 17th and 18th centuries and was partitioned by Russia, Prussia and Austria. Lithuania restored independence in 1918, but was occupied by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany during the 20th century.

On 11 March 1990, Lithuania restored its independence, becoming the first Soviet republic to do so. Today, it is a democratic European state shaped by its Baltic origins, the legacy of the Grand Duchy and its long struggle for sovereignty.
