King of West Francia

- Lived
- 879 – 929
- Role
- King of West Francia
Charles III, a posthumous son of Louis the Stammerer, became sole king of West Francia in 898. His epithet "simplex" meant straightforward, not foolish. Unable to expel the Seine Vikings, he made the agreement of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911 after their defeat at Chartres, granting Rouen and its region to Rollo in exchange for baptism, fealty and defence of the river. The same year he acquired Lotharingia. Deposed by his magnates in 922, he was captured in 923 and died a prisoner at Péronne.
