Location: Crimea

The Cimmerians, a nomadic people known from Greek and Assyrian sources, dominate the steppes north of the Black Sea. Within the broader Antiquity period: Cimmerians, Scythians and Sarmatians ruled the steppe while Greek cities traded on the Black Sea coast; later Goths and Huns passed through. At this point in the timeline (c. 1200 BCE), the lands of today's Ukraine were divided among nomadic peoples of the steppe, Greek and later Byzantine coastal cities, and Slavic and other tribes of the forest-steppe. This event mattered because it changed who ruled Ukrainian lands and how political power was organized. It is placed here so readers can follow it alongside the states, rulers and turning points of Ukrainian history.
