# Özal wins the election (6 November 1983)

In the first election after the coup, Turgut Özal's Motherland Party (ANAP) won a majority, defeating parties favoured by the generals. Özal privatised state enterprises, liberalised trade and built infrastructure. He became president in 1989. The Özal years transformed Turkey's economy and society.
