Location: Fagersta, Västmanland
Themes: Disaster

On 21 August 2026 an 18-year-old pupil armed with a sword attacked people at the Brinellskolan school in Fagersta, Västmanland. A 17-year-old girl was killed and three other students were injured, two of them seriously. The attacker was arrested at the scene. The attack came three weeks before the general election, and party leaders suspended their campaigns for several days. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson attended a memorial in the town. Investigators found that the suspect had followed online communities glorifying mass killers, and police also arrested a 16-year-old accused of encouraging him. On 24 August the government announced a commission on school violence to study prevention, online radicalisation and copycat attacks. Coming only eighteen months after the Örebro shooting, the attack intensified debate on school safety, the influence of violent online subcultures on young people and the security of Swedish schools.
