In 1645 the Swedish crown began publishing a regular newspaper, first called Ordinari Post Tijdender, printed in Stockholm under the authority of the royal chancery and the new state postal service. It later took the name Post- och Inrikes Tidningar. The paper was created on the initiative of Queen Christina's government and Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna, who wanted a channel for official news and war reports as Sweden fought in Germany and Denmark. The postal service founded in 1636 distributed it across the realm. For more than three centuries the paper served as the official gazette, printing laws, announcements and court notices. It stopped appearing in print in 2007 and continues online, publishing official notices such as bankruptcies and company registrations, and it is often described as the oldest newspaper still published in the world.

## Why it matters
It gave the Swedish state an official news channel and is regarded as the world's oldest surviving newspaper.
