Themes: ruler-change

Born at Italica near Seville, Trajan became Roman emperor in 98 CE, the first emperor to come from a province. Under him the Roman Empire reached its greatest territorial extent. Within the broader Roman Hispania period, Rome conquered the peninsula over two centuries and then integrated it deeply into the empire through cities, roads, the Latin language, Roman law and, eventually, Christianity. This event is placed at 98 CE in the chronology so it can be read alongside the political, military, social and cultural changes around it.

## Why it matters
His accession symbolised how deeply Hispania had been integrated into the Roman world.
