Location: Nitra, Nitra Region
Themes: Key Events

Following the confirmation of its toll rights in 1111, the abbey of Zobor sought to protect its extensive landholdings, which it had received from the Árpád kings and other donors. Medieval monasteries often recorded their properties in charters to defend them against rival claims by nobles and royal officials. In 1113, during the reign of King Coloman, a second charter was drawn up listing the possessions of the abbey of Saint Hippolytus at Zobor. The document names over 150 villages, rivers, estates and landmarks, mainly in the Nitra region and western Slovakia, and records their boundaries. The parchment is relatively well preserved, though part of it is missing. Most of the personal and place names are Slavic, with a smaller number of German and Latinised names. The Second Zobor Document is an exceptionally important source for the historical geography of western Slovakia at the beginning of the twelfth century. For many villages it is the earliest written mention, and it shows a dense network of settlements with a largely Slavic population. Historians have used it to study the settlement structure, landholding and language of the region in the early Kingdom of Hungary.
