The five-member Directory governed France from November 1795 until Bonaparte's coup of 18 Brumaire (9–10 November 1799). In the Seychelles Quincy continued to govern on behalf of France while observing the 1794 capitulation, renewing its terms whenever British warships called, as in September 1798. The islands supplied French corsairs and British ships alike, and the colony prospered under this ambiguous neutrality.
