Themes: Wars & Battles

Tusun Pasha advanced into al-Qassim, but his forces were exposed and short of supplies. He and Abdullah bin Saud agreed a truce under which Abdullah renounced claims to the Hejaz, recognised Ottoman supremacy and allowed pilgrims safe passage, while Najd remained under Saudi rule. Muhammad Ali, who had returned to Egypt, and the Ottoman sultan both refused to ratify the agreement. Tusun himself returned to Egypt and died there in 1816.

## Why it matters
The failed truce showed that the Ottomans sought not coexistence but the destruction of the Saudi state.
