Themes: ruler-change

Kenny Anthony's first term had been dominated by the banana crisis, the effort to attract tourism investment and the shock to the tourism industry from the terrorist attacks on the United States in September 2001, which sharply reduced air travel to the Caribbean weeks before the election. The opposition United Workers Party, rebuilding after its 1997 rout, was led by Morella Joseph, the first woman to head a major Saint Lucian party. At the general election of 3 December 2001 the SLP won 14 of the 17 seats in the House of Assembly and the UWP three. Labour's share of the vote fell from its 1997 peak, but the result gave Anthony a comfortable majority for a second five-year term. It was the last time for more than two decades that a Saint Lucian government was re-elected. During its second term the government continued infrastructure and education projects, began a process of constitutional review, saw the Pitons inscribed as a World Heritage Site and prepared to host matches in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. Rising crime, debates over large hotel developments and the continuing decline of bananas gradually eroded its popularity, setting the stage for the return of the UWP under Sir John Compton in 2006. At this point in the timeline (3 December 2001), the Queen of Saint Lucia was Elizabeth II (22 February 1979 – 8 September 2022); the Governor-General of Saint Lucia was Dame Pearlette Louisy (17 September 1997 – 31 December 2017). Government: the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia was Kenny Anthony (24 May 1997 – 15 December 2006).

## Why it matters
