Location: Lima, Lima
Themes: Politics

In a televised address, President Fujimori dissolves Congress, suspends the 1979 Constitution and purges the judiciary with the backing of the armed forces and intelligence adviser Vladimiro Montesinos. Tanks surround Congress, media outlets are occupied, and opposition figures are detained. The 'autogolpe' is popular with many Peruvians weary of terrorism and gridlock but is condemned abroad, forcing elections for a constituent congress.

## Why it matters
The self-coup turns Fujimori's elected government into an authoritarian regime, backed by the military and intelligence services, that endures until 2000.
