Hamdallah, a linguist and president of An-Najah National University, was named prime minister on 2 June 2013, resigned on 23 June and was reappointed in September 2013. He headed the consensus government of June 2014 formed with Hamas support, which failed to take over Gaza in practice, and resigned in January 2019 amid Fatah-Hamas stalemate.
