Branko Crvenkovski, who at 30 became one of Europe's youngest heads of government, led the Social Democratic Union (the reformed League of Communists) for six years. His governments secured UN membership in 1993 under the provisional name 'the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia', weathered the Greek embargo of 1994–95 and concluded the Interim Accord with Greece of September 1995. Returning after the 2002 election at the head of the 'Together for Macedonia' coalition with the Albanian DUI, Crvenkovski implemented the Ohrid Agreement and submitted the EU membership application in March 2004. He left the premiership on being elected President after Boris Trajkovski died in a plane crash. Crvenkovski, prime minister in 1992–1998 and 2002–2004, won the 2004 election. Macedonia became an EU candidate country in December 2005, but at the NATO Bucharest summit of April 2008 Greece blocked its invitation over the name dispute.
