# Redbad - King of the Frisians

Redbad (Radbod) ruled Frisia at the height of its power. Defeated by Pepin of Herstal at Dorestad around 690, he lost the river area, but after Pepin's death he recaptured Utrecht, sailed up the Rhine to Cologne and defeated Charles Martel in 716. Legend says he refused baptism rather than be separated from his ancestors.
