Location: Kathmandu Valley
Themes: Devaladevi, Succession

After Jayari Malla died in 1344, the valley had no king for three years. Devaladevi, the powerful widow of the Karnat king Harisimhadeva, negotiated a settlement with the Bhonta house. Jayarajadeva, an illegitimate son of the Bhonta king Jayanandadeva, was crowned on 27 July 1347, according to one Wikipedia article. Another gives his accession as 6 September 1348. Under the settlement she kept de facto authority and held titles ranking above the king's. The arrangement reflected the balance of power between the Tripura and Bhonta houses that had existed since 1258. With her minister Aneka Rama she brought Patan under control and annexed villages including Kirtipur. The two also built up the treasury of the Pashupatinath temple. The settlement kept the peace for a short time but left the valley divided and poorly defended. Before long the Bengal army arrived. After Jayarajadeva's death in early 1361, his son took the throne under the same agreement. Devaladevi's authority lasted until her death in 1366, and her arrangement set the stage for Jayasthiti Malla's rise. At this point in the timeline (1347), King Jayari Malla (c. 1320 – c. 1348) ruled the Malla kingdom of Nepal Mandala (the Kathmandu Valley).

## Why it matters
A queen-regent's compromise preserved the Malla throne for the Bhonta house, but with limited real power for the king.
