Themes: main-event

Moroccans voted on 23 September 2026 for all 395 seats of the House of Representatives. The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) won 97 seats, the RNI 66 (down 36), Istiqlal 65, the PJD 54 (up 41), the Popular Movement 29, the USFP 26 and the PPS 19. Turnout was reported at about 38 percent, down nearly 13 points from 2021. No party reached the 198-seat majority. The election came a year after the GenZ 212 protests that denounced corruption and weak public services. The RNI of the outgoing head of government Aziz Akhannouch, who did not stand again, acknowledged a decline in its vote. The electoral threshold was removed under the revised law. Overseas Moroccans could not vote abroad. A coalition was formed in October. Voting used party-list proportional representation, with 305 seats from local constituencies and 90 from regional lists, of which at least one third were reserved for women. At the date of this event the principal authority over the largest part of present-day Morocco, by the convention of this dataset, lay with Mohammed VI, King of Morocco (1999–present). The government was headed by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. The result ended the RNI's government and partly revived the PJD, but the low turnout showed continuing disaffection with party politics. The vote raised questions about the legitimacy of the parties and about whether the new government can respond to the demands raised by the youth protests of 2025 on jobs and public services.

## Why it matters
