An Austrian field marshal who negotiated the Peace of Pressburg (1805), Johann I saw Napoleon include Liechtenstein in the Confederation of the Rhine on 12 July 1806, making it a sovereign state when the Holy Roman Empire ended. To remain in Austrian service he nominally transferred the principality to his three-year-old son Karl while keeping power as guardian. Liechtenstein joined the German Confederation in 1815, and he granted the first (estates) constitution in 1818.
