On 26 August 1984 Prince Franz Joseph II appointed Hereditary Prince Hans-Adam his deputy (Stellvertreter), transferring to him all government business and the exercise of the princely sovereign powers while himself remaining head of state. Hans-Adam, who had criticised Liechtenstein's dependence on Switzerland in his 1970 'rucksack speech', acted in this role until he succeeded as prince on his father's death on 13 November 1989. Reigning prince since 13 November 1989, Hans-Adam II led Liechtenstein into the United Nations (1990) and the European Economic Area (1995) and rebuilt the princely family's fortune through the LGT group. The constitutional revision he proposed, approved by referendum in March 2003, strengthened the monarch's powers. On 15 August 2004 he appointed Hereditary Prince Alois as his deputy to exercise the sovereign's powers, while remaining head of state.
