Abdullah al-Thani, a career army officer and defence minister in Zeidan's cabinet, was appointed acting prime minister by the General National Congress when Zeidan was dismissed in March 2014. He was confirmed as interim prime minister on 8 April 2014. After the June 2014 election of the House of Representatives and the outbreak of the Second Civil War, al-Thani's government moved to Tobruk and then Bayda when Libya Dawn militias took Tripoli in August 2014. It remained the internationally recognised government, allied with Khalifa Haftar's forces, until the UN-backed Government of National Accord took over in 2016.
