Mustafa IV was placed on the throne by the Kabakçı Mustafa revolt of 1807, which overthrew Selim III and ended the Nizam-ı Cedid reforms. When Alemdar Mustafa Pasha marched on Istanbul to restore Selim in 1808, Mustafa ordered Selim's murder, was deposed and was executed later that year.
