Peel, a former Chief Secretary for Ireland, launched modern Conservatism with the Tamworth Manifesto. His minority government fell after Whigs, Radicals and Daniel O'Connell's Irish members combined in the Lichfield House Compact and defeated him on Irish church revenues. Peel banned O'Connell's monster meeting at Clontarf in 1843, but also increased the Maynooth Grant and founded the Queen's Colleges. When the potato blight struck in 1845 he imported Indian corn for Irish relief and repealed the Corn Laws in 1846, splitting his party and losing office.
