The Prambanan temple complex near Yogyakarta, dedicated to the Hindu trimurti of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, is built around 850 under the Mataram king Rakai Pikatan or his successor. Reliefs on the balustrades depict the Ramayana. The Shivagrha inscription of 856 is associated with the main shrine. Its tall central temple of Shiva is a masterpiece of Javanese Hindu architecture. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the exact founding date and patron are debated.
