Location: Madurai, Tamil Nadu
Themes: Politics

The governor Jalaluddin Ahsan Khan breaks from Delhi and proclaims the Madurai Sultanate in the Pandya heartland around 1334-35. The sultanate rules a portion of Tamil country for about four decades. Hindu chroniclers such as the Madhura Vijayam, a Sanskrit poem, describe its rule as oppressive, with the temple of Srirangam abandoned for years. Ibn Battuta visited Madurai in about 1344 and describes the state's collapse into plague and war, showing a sultanate in decline.

## Why it matters
It was the first Muslim state in the far south and prompted the Hindu counter-movement behind Vijayanagara and the revival of Hindu temple worship.
