After Tirésias Simon Sam resigned on 12 May 1902, Port-au-Prince was briefly without a constituted executive until a Committee of Public Safety under Pierre Théoma Boisrond-Canal was formed on 14 May 1902. The resignation opened a struggle for the succession between Anténor Firmin and Pierre Nord Alexis.
