Philip II invited Aristotle, son of a former Macedonian court doctor, to educate the thirteen-year-old Alexander. Lessons took place at the Sanctuary of the Nymphs at Mieza. Aristotle taught ethics, politics, literature and natural science. Alexander is said to have carried a copy of the Iliad annotated by his tutor on his campaigns. The tutoring lasted about three years, until Alexander became regent in 340 BCE.
