# Konavle War (1430–1432)

Location: Konavle, Croatia
Themes: Wars & Revolts

The fertile district of Konavle, south-east of Dubrovnik, was held by the Bosnian nobles Sandalj Hranić Kosača and Radoslav Pavlović. Ragusa wished to acquire it to protect its hinterland. In 1419 Sandalj sold his half to the republic, and in 1426 Radoslav agreed to sell the other half. Radoslav soon regretted the sale and, encouraged by the Ottomans, refused to hand over his part. In 1430 war broke out between Radoslav and Ragusa. Ragusa sought support from King Tvrtko II and from Sandalj, Radoslav's rival, while Radoslav relied on Ottoman backing. Fighting and raids continued until 1432, when peace was made through Ottoman mediation and Ragusa kept Konavle. Ragusa also employed bribery and diplomacy at the Ottoman court to secure a favourable settlement, and its envoys repeatedly travelled to the sultan to argue their case. The war showed how Bosnia's great nobles pursued independent foreign policies and how the Ottomans had become arbiters of Bosnian disputes. Konavle remained part of the Ragusan Republic for the rest of its existence and is today part of Croatia.
