Agaja turned Dahomey into a regional power: he conquered Allada in 1724 and Whydah in 1727, giving the kingdom direct access to European traders on the coast. Repeated invasions by the cavalry of the Oyo Empire from 1726 forced him to pay tribute to the Alaafin from about 1730. He died in 1740.
