Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros, a naval officer who fought at Trafalgar, was the last viceroy to rule in Buenos Aires, appointed by the Junta of Seville. He authorised trade with Britain in 1809. When news arrived that Seville had fallen to the French, a cabildo abierto deposed him during the May Revolution of 1810, and he was expelled to Spain.
